The Town of Middleburg, VA

The town of Middleburg, VA is a well known tourist attraction In VA as well as being known as the “Nations Hunt and Horse Capital”. Middleburg lies less than an hour west of Washington, DC on Route 50. The drive is often made for weekend tourists who want to visit the country.

Quaint small town charm, Middleburg is lined with antique shops, gift shops, tack stores and restaraunts.

The town was established in 1787 by Lt. Col. Levin Powell and the land was purchased at the small price of $2.50/acre from Joseph Chinn, was a first cousin to George Washington. Middleburg’s name was changed from the name of Chinn’s Crossroads to its name it is now known by because it was in the middle of Alexandria and Winchester along the Ashby Gap Trading Route – better known as Route 50.

While the small town charm of Middleburg entices tourists who want a nice country drive and some antique shopping or lunch at the Red Fox Inn, Red Horse Tavern or one of the other eating establishments, the real lure of the town is the equestrian acitivities. Steeplechase Racing, Fox Hunting, Eventing, Show Hunters and Jumpers abound in neighboring farms and many shows take place on the weekends. Middleburg is host to some of the country’s finest equestrian Olympic competitors.

January is National Radon Action Month, a time to make sure that your family is protected against radon exposure. It’s estimated that 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. and over 1 million homes in Canada have elevated levels of radon. While this is scary to think about, there are ways to lower your home’s risk.

What exactly is radon?
Radon is an odorless and colorless gas that forms when radioactive metals in rocks, soil and groundwater break down. This is a naturally occurring process, meaning everyone has some level of exposure to radon at all times. However, prolonged exposure can occur when there are cracks and gaps in a home’s foundation.

What homes are most at risk?
Foundation issues can occur in homes regardless of their age or architecture. A newly built home is just as susceptible as an older one. This goes to show that it pays to be proactive in monitoring and mitigating radon in your home no matter where you live.

What can be done?
While you won’t be able to achieve a 0% exposure level to radon, you can significantly lower the odds. Here are a few ways to keep your home safe:

Consistently test for radon and have a monitor installed.
Increase airflow in your home.
Seal up cracks and gaps.
Incorporate radon-resistant construction techniques if you’re purchasing a new build

I think many of us are glad to see 2020 go and are looking forward to a new year. 2020 has been a difficult year with the Covid19 Pandemic and the many hardships it caused for people in their jobs, companies and personal lives.

For me personally, I thought the market would not do as well during Covid, but surprisingly it was my best year ever. The market was sky rocketing, housing shortages were everywhere which made it tough for buyers, but a boon for sellers. I was able to keep busy which helped alot to keep my mind off my personal losses.

On Mother’s day, I woke up to hear that my mother had passed quietly in the night at age 91. I was grateful that she went peacefully, but sad that with Covid19 restrictions I was not able to visit her. Later in the summer, I also lost one of my closest friends to non Covid health issues. It was tough to focus with one loss right after the other, but my business helped me mentally and I had something to focus on.

I was extremely grateful to my family and friends who were with me this year, and also glad I had my pups who took me for walks, played agility with me and who begged me to toss a frisbee for them.

As 2020 comes to a close, I hope that you all have made it through this year and have a light shining into 2021. I think the real estate market will still be good for a time and hopeful that the vaccine will help restore us to some normalcy. On the positive note, 2020 did leave a lot of time for reflection, some healing and at the end of the year, the ability to re-focus on moving forward.
